Ambition of this Work Group

The Work Group (WG) on Education, Training & Communication focuses on cross-linking all currently active projects in the NanoSafety Cluster. In addition, the WG endeavors to align all training offers in nanosafety projects and beyond, this effort shall be including the research fields of microplastics’, advanced/innovative materials’, or nanomedicines’ safety assessment. Joint educational strategies are developed with representatives from the currently ongoing projects. The main activity to facilitate this essential and fruitful cross-talk between the people that are actively involved in the work of the projects is executed by informative webinars and virtual training sessions. Due to this cross-linking initiative across different projects secondments of early-stage researchers to other expert centers may be envisioned.

Specific objectives

to ensure high level of skills and consistency within the projects;
to circumvent duplication of training efforts;
to transfer the generated knowledge to external stakeholders;
to enhance the training offerings through collaboration and sharing of experience;
to make the generated knowledge available and easily accessible online to ensure greater impact
to collect training webinars already taking place in projects and suggest ways to digitalise onsite training activities
to engage different communities (e.g., nano medicine, risk governance, safe-by-design, microplastics, advanced/novel materials)
to foster interdisciplinary approaches to designing training.

Meet the team

Martin Himly

WG Chair

Martin Himly (ORCID: 0000-0001-5416-085X) studied Chemistry/Biotechnology at the University of Graz (Austria) and received his PhD in 2001. He performed research abroad at The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA, USA in the field of oncology and virology. He has a strong background in recombinant allergen diagnostics/vaccines, standardization of allergen therapeutics (Biological Standardization Program BSP090, EDQM, Strasbourg, FR), characterization of protein pharmaceutics, biochemistry, and immunology. He joined the Bio-Nano Group of Albert Duschl in 2012 and has a vivid interest in applying realistic advanced cellular co-culture models investigating immune mechanisms of nanomaterials, bio-nano conjugates, and nanomedical candidates. He has been involved in a number of FP7 and H2020 projects in nanosafety (NanoTOES, NanoValid, NanoEIS, PANDORA, HUMUNITY, EC4SafeNano, NanoCommons, NanoRigo) and coordinated the educational Sparkling Science project “Nan-O-Style” www.uni-salzburg.at/nan-o-style). Martin Himly holds an Associate Professor position in Biochemistry and Immunology at the Department of Biosciences of the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS) and is member of the Allergy-Cancer-BioNano Research Center (ACBN) and the Doctoral School DSP Biomolecules of PLUS.

Judith Friesl

WG Co-Chair, Dissemination Group Member

As VP EMEA for Yordas Group, Judith Friesl is responsible for the region’s strategic direction and is often the first point of contact for clients. She has established and led Yordas Group’s German subsidiary, taking responsibility for business development, account management, project delivery and financial performance. As Business Unit Lead for Yordas Group’s Public Funded Research Projects and Training Division she oversees the delivery of large research projects involving stakeholder engagement and scientific dissemination programs. She is a project management specialist with more than a decade of experience in managing large regulatory compliance, sustainability and stakeholder engagement projects. In addition, Judith has actively marketed and arranged training sessions for both EU-funded projects and for Yordas Group, overseeing the process to ensure successful delivery to all participants. Additionally, Judith has developed and implemented international marketing communications strategies in the private and public sectors for 15+ years in the UK, Europe and Asia. Currently, she is involved in the Horizon 2020 EU research projects CHARISMA, SbD4Nano, SUNSHINE and the Horizon Europe project IMPROVE and SUNRISE. She is an active member of the NSC Dissemination Group and co-chair of the NSC work group on Communication, Training and Education (deputising for Stella Stoycheva).
